One of the first things that you begin to notice after you turn 50 is declining testosterone levels. More specifically, you notice some of the side effects. Low libido, increased body fat, reduced muscle mass, low mood, poor sleep, and an increase in stress and anxiety.

There are many ways to combat low testosterone, you can improve your diet, exercise regularly, improve your sleep quality, reduce your exposure to stressful situations, and you can top up your testosterone levels naturally using a testosterone-boosting supplement.

In this article, we will be taking a look at five of the best testosterone boosters for men over 50.

We will also give you a decent understanding of the role that testosterone plays in men’s health and how you can support healthy levels through diet, exercise, lifestyle, and supplementation.

Testosterone Booster #1 Prime Male

Prime Male is our overall favourite testosterone booster. It contains ingredients that can help to support and protect testosterone production as you age. It can help you to burn fat, build muscle, and increase your libido.

Prime Male At a Glance

There are twelve ingredients in the Prime Male formula. You can find out all that you need to know on the Prime Male website, as it offers label transparency.

A single serving size is four capsules, and you are directed to space these capsules out throughout the day.

Pros

Cons

Prime Male Ingredients

Prime Male Vitality ComplexWhat’s great about Prime Male is that every ingredient has a specific purpose, even the vitamins and minerals.

It contains 4000 IU of vitamin D3, which has been repeatedly shown to protect and boost testosterone production.

Prime Male also contains the ingredients that make up ZMA (zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6).

If your diet is low in ZMA, then there is evidence that it can help to restore low testosterone levels.

A study in the Journal of Exercise Physiology (2000) found that College Football players who took ZMA saw a 33% increase in testosterone as well as increases in strength and power. (1)

ZMA may also help to improve sleep quality, which is crucial for healthy testosterone production.

D-Aspartic Acid is one of the main ingredients in Prime Male, with 1600mg per serving.

D-Aspartic acid can cause a spike in testosterone production, particularly in men with low testosterone levels.

Ashwagandha is another top-quality ingredient found in Prime Male. It can help to prevent testosterone decline by reducing stress and anxiety and helping to combat insomnia.

It can help to improve your physical and mental health and can help to restore energy levels.

Prime Male contains 160 mg of nettle root extract (not to be confused with nettle leaf extract).

Nettle root extract has the ability to bind with sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), which prevents it from binding to testosterone and reducing your free testosterone levels.

There is also luteolin, which has the ability to inhibit aromatase. This is an enzyme that converts free testosterone into estrogen.

Luteolin can therefore help to protect and restore natural testosterone levels.

The final ingredient in the Prime Male formula is ginseng, which has many health benefits. The entire formula is designed to boost testosterone naturally by improving your physical and mental health.

Prime Male Review

Prime Male is the best supplement for improving natural testosterone production on this list.

Taking testosterone supplements can help to boost testosterone production through direct and indirect methods.

There are ingredients in the formula that directly boost testosterone (D-Aspartic acid, vitamin D, ZMA) and ingredients that can indirectly raise testosterone levels (ashwagandha, luteolin, nettle root, and ginseng).

This combination is what makes Prime Male so effective.

The formula covers all bases, uses high-quality, clinically dosed ingredients, and can help to promote testosterone production in men who have low testosterone levels.

Combine Prime Male with exercise and diet, and you can expect to lose weight and see muscle growth. It is a seriously good testosterone booster.

Testosterone Booster #2 Hunter Test

The second best testosterone booster on this list is Hunter Test, an amazing natural testosterone booster that provides premium ingredients at a premium price.

If you are looking to boost testosterone naturally and are prepared to do anything to achieve that result, then Hunter Test is the supplement for you.

Hunter Test At a Glance

Hunter Test contains nine clinically-dosed ingredients. The dosages are so effective that it requires six capsules to take your daily serving.

This is an indication of just how well-dosed Hunter Test is compared to most testosterone boosters.

The ingredients label is easily accessible on the website and can be found on the packaging, as Hunter believes in label transparency.

Pros

Cons

Hunter Test Ingredients

Best Testosterone Booster for Men Over 50 - Hunter TestThe first thing that jumps out at you when you inspect the ingredients label is the massive dose of vitamin D that you get with each serving.

Hunter Test contains 5000 IU of vitamin D, which is higher even than Prime Male!

Hunter Test also contains high doses of vitamin K2, zinc, and magnesium. There is 3000 mg of D-Aspartic Acid per serving, alongside ashwagandha and Asian ginseng.

One of the most interesting ingredients is Indole-3-Carbinol.

This ingredient can be found in cruciferous vegetables, and it is known for its ability to inhibit the enzyme aromatase.

Aromatase is an enzyme that converts excess testosterone into estrogen, something that men with low to medium testosterone levels can do without!

Reducing aromatase levels can help to restore testosterone and even boost it.

Hunter Test also contains 10 mg of boron, which can help to reduce circulating levels of Sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and therefore increase testosterone levels.

Hunter Test Review

It is an incredible supplement with clinically dosed ingredients, full-label transparency, and not a single dud in its formula.

The premium price tag attached is the only thing keeping Hunter Test from the top spot.

If you are prepared to fully invest in your hormonal health, then Hunter Test is the supplement for you.

The large number (6) of capsules you have to take each day may be a little off-putting for some, but this is due to the excellent dosages of each ingredient found in the formula.

Testosterone Booster #3 TestoFuel

Another fantastic addition to this list is TestoFuel, with a similar ingredient list to Hunter Test but a few key differences.

TestoFuel offers variety to the customer. The addition of Maca root extract and oyster shell makes TestoFuel unique in this market.

At a Glance

TestoFuel contains ten clinically-dosed ingredients. You need to take four capsules per day to get a full serving.

The label is fully transparent, and it is easily accessible on the TestoFuel website.

Pros

Cons

TestoFuel Ingredients

TestoFuel- The Best Anabolic Support ComplexAs with the previous two testosterone boosters, TestoFuel contains high doses of vitamin D, vitamin K, magnesium, and zinc. It is also an excellent source of D-Aspartic Acid, Panax ginseng, and boron.

But it also contains a few ingredients that we haven’t seen before. There are 800 mg of fenugreek seed extract in each serving.

Fenugreek works in a similar way to boron, reducing the circulation of SHBG (that binds to testosterone and lowers free testosterone levels).

Fenugreek has also been shown to raise libido and reduce body fat levels. While Maca doesn’t appear to boost testosterone directly, it is a really clever addition to this list.

Maca can help to lower anxiety and stress and improve sleep quality. It can also boost your libido, improve sperm quality, and it also helps to improve sexual function in men.

Another unusual (yet exceptional) ingredient on the list is oyster extract which helps to inhibit aromatase (the enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen).

Review

While TestoFuel may not deliver the massive testosterone boost of Prime Male or Hunter Test, it works in a more subtle, yet no less effective, manner.

Reducing aromatase and SHBG levels while supporting good sleep and reducing stress and anxiety means that your natural testosterone levels are protected and supported.

TestoFuel is perfect for increasing lean muscle mass, supporting healthy testosterone levels, and speeding up your recovery from exercise. Your libido will also see a marked improvement when taking TestoFuel.

Testosterone Booster #4 TestoMax

Another solid seller in the testosterone market, TestoMax has a superb ingredients list and a stellar reputation for delivering results.

TestoMax At a Glance

There are 11 ingredients in the TestoMax formula, spread out between four capsules. The ingredients list is easy to find, and TestoMax uses transparent labelling.

Everything you need to know about the formula is available on the website.

Pros

Cons

TestoMax Ingredients

Testo Max - Best Testosterone Booster for Men Over 50The ingredients list of TestoMax is very similar to that of Prime Male, just without the ashwagandha or luteolin and with fenugreek and boron added.

Fenugreek has been covered in previous reviews (see above), but is a decent supplement ingredient that has a variety of uses. Boron is great at reducing SHBG levels and increasing free testosterone.

There is a very decent dosage of D-Aspartic Acid, and vitamin D levels are good but could be higher. And there are good levels of ZMA, which is great for sleep, recovery from exercise, and supporting healthy testosterone.

There is also nettle leaf extract, which is quite the same as nettle root but can still have some benefits. Inhibiting the enzyme a5 Reductase and allowing more testosterone to circulate in the body. (2)

TestoMax Review

TestoMax is a decent supplement for boosting low testosterone levels and protecting testosterone production.

It has some clever ingredients, but the formula is a little too similar to Prime Male, and it can’t really compete.

That doesn’t mean that TestoMax is bad, it can still boost testosterone levels, but it could do with branching out a little and updating the formula slightly.

Testosterone Booster #5 Transparent Labs Vitality

The final supplement for boosting and supporting testosterone levels on this list is Vitality by Transparent Labs. It aims to help raise low testosterone, support muscle growth, and prevent weight gain.

While some of the ingredients are highly effective, it does appear to be a little light, particularly when it comes to vitamins and minerals. It can help to promote testosterone production, but does it go far enough?

Transparent Labs Vitality At a Glance

There are eight ingredients in the Transparent Labs formula. A serving size is two capsules, significantly smaller than the previous four supplements.

Pros

Cons

Transparent Labs Vitality Ingredients

Transparent Labs Vitality - Best Testosterone Booster for Men Over 50Vitality has an interesting ingredient list, and it is unique compared to the other products on this list. The only ingredients we’ve seen before are ashwagandha, zinc, and boron. The rest are new.

There are 250 mg of shilajit extract, a mineral that is popular in Ayurvedic medicine and does appear to help men with low testosterone to attain normal testosterone levels, and it also improves sperm quality.

Vitality also contains quercetin, which can increase energy levels and may help improve muscle protein synthesis and muscle tissue growth but doesn’t affect testosterone.

There is also Diindolylmethane (DIM), which can help to inhibit aromatase and Eurycoma longifolia, which may or may not raise testosterone (results are mixed). (3)

Transparent Labs Vitality Review

While Vitality is a little more interesting than the others on this list thanks to its unique ingredients. It doesn’t do enough to oust them from the top. There is a reason why most supplements have certain ingredients because they work! Still, if you are looking for something a little different, Vitality is the one to look for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are the Common Side Effects of Taking Testosterone Boosters?

There aren’t any side effects from taking natural testosterone boosters. They are completely natural, and the dosages are within safe and acceptable limits. Double-check with your doctor if you are taking any medication or have a medical condition.

How Long Does It Take to See Changes in My Body After Taking Testosterone Boosters?

This depends on whether you are also exercising and improving your diet. But D-Aspartic Acid can cause significant increases in testosterone levels within a week or so. Actually, being able to see changes can take longer, though, as increased muscle mass and reduced body fat can take around 8-12 weeks.

Who Should Use Natural Testosterone Boosters?

Men who suspect that their testosterone levels are not as high as they should be. Men who are experiencing common side effects of low testosterone, men who lead stressful, sedentary lives, and who may suffer from obesity.

Is It Legal to Take Testosterone Boosters?

Yes, it is 100% legal to take natural testosterone-boosting supplements. The confusion arises from conflating natural testosterone boosters such as the ones in this article and the illegal anabolic steroids that are used in bodybuilding. Nothing that is found in a natural supplement is illegal.

Do You Need a Prescription from Your Doctor to Buy A Testosterone Booster?

Not at all. Natural testosterone boosters are completely safe to consume and do not require a prescription. However, it is still a good idea to consult with your doctor before taking them if you have a medical condition or take medication.

Are Testosterone Boosting Supplements for Men Over 50 Really Worth It?

They can be, provided you take them alongside changes to your lifestyle. You also need to be exercising, improving your diet, reducing stress, and sleeping better. If you manage all of this, then testosterone supplements can be highly beneficial.
